Dr. Murillo is a Professor in the Departments of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Michigan State University, and is the Director of TEMPEST. His research addresses non-equilibrium and strongly coupled plasmas, where scale separation and near-equilibrium closures break down, spanning kinetic theory, molecular dynamics, and transport in dense and warm dense matter. A central theme of his work is multiscale coupling — connecting atomistic, kinetic, and hydrodynamic descriptions of the same system — together with data-driven methods including surrogate modeling, uncertainty quantification, and Bayesian frameworks for prediction from sparse or costly data. He is a developer of open-source scientific software, including the Sarkas molecular dynamics suite, and led the community Transport Coefficient Comparison Workshops that benchmark competing models against one another. Before joining MSU he spent two decades at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he remains as a Faculty Guest in the Computational Physics and Methods Group, in plasma theory and high energy-density physics.
