Dr. O’Shea is a Professor of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering and Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. His research develops computational and theoretical models of astrophysical and terrestrial plasma systems, with applications ranging from galaxy formation and the circumgalactic medium to plasma turbulence and high-energy-density plasma physics. Drawing on extensive experience in high-performance computing and open source scientific software development, he uses large-scale numerical simulations, magnetohydrodynamics, and data-intensive methods to investigate complex physical processes across widely separated spatial and temporal scales. He is a developer of open-source computational frameworks and is actively involved in collaborations applying advanced computational methods to plasma turbulence and high-energy-density physics. He is also committed to preparing students and researchers for careers in computational science through interdisciplinary research mentoring, computational-science education, open-source software development, and leadership in research cyberinfrastructure.
