Dr. Mike Wood is an Assistant Professor at San José State University where he has a dual appointment at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and in the Department of Computer Science. His research focuses on glacier-ocean interactions and the turbulent subglacial discharge plumes that drive submarine melting, fjord mixing, and freshwater transport in glaciated fjords. His work uses ocean modeling to connect small-scale turbulent processes near glacier termini with larger-scale changes in fjord circulation and glacier stability. Within TEMPEST, he contributes a test case relevant to the Earth system for developing multiscale turbulence theories and machine-learning methods that can translate unresolved plume dynamics into improved coarse-resolution ocean models. He aims to build a predictive framework that bridges plume-resolving simulations, observations, and regional-scale models.
