Dr. Wolfgang Kerzendorf is an Associate Professor at Michigan State University, appointed in Physics and Astronomy and in Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering. He works on the inference side of plasma modeling: machine-learning emulators for radiative transfer, and the non-equilibrium atomic kinetics underneath it, built so the models run fast enough to be tested against laboratory and observational measurements. His emulators carry calibrated uncertainty from active learning, which refines the model only where the answer is sensitive instead of across the whole parameter space, so it is clear where a prediction can be trusted and where it cannot. What he brings to TEMPEST is the machinery that lets the center's models be confronted with real data. He also leads TARDIS, an open-source radiative-transfer code affiliated with NumFOCUS, and with it a community practice for building software that outlives a single grant.
