Associate Professor
Dr. Sean Couch is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Physics and Astronomy and Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering at Michigan State University, with an affiliate appointment at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. He is a theoretical and computational astrophysicist whose research uses large-scale numerical simulations and turbulence modeling to understand the deaths of massive stars, core-collapse supernovae, and the formation of neutron stars and black holes. His group develops high-performance multiphysics simulation methods and reduced models for turbulent convection and magnetohydrodynamics, connecting detailed three-dimensional calculations to predictive stellar and explosion models. Within TEMPEST, Dr. Couch contributes astrophysical test cases and expertise in multiscale turbulence closure, exascale computing, and scientific software.
