Turbulence Across Twelve Orders of Magnitude

TEMPEST is a National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center bringing together eight universities, five one-of-a-kind research facilities, and a computing effort built on artificial intelligence, new mathematical methods, and custom hardware. Turbulence — the chaotic swirling in smoke, in rivers, in the space between stars — is famously hard to predict because the smallest motions ripple up to shape the largest. Our goal is to make turbulence predictable, from the space between particles to the clouds of gas that stretch across the galaxy, with applications from fusion energy to exploding stars.
